Wednesday: April 30, 2014
My little brother and I are staying with some friends while our house gets packed and moved. They've been nice enough to feed us and let us use their internet for the time being. This is their dog, Bandit.

Day 66: Reflections and Goodbyes
Tuesday: April 29, 2014
This is the last photo I took inside my old neighborhood. My family and I have had to move houses, so we're no longer in the lovely Green Community. It's bittersweet, because I didn't want to leave but I'm looking forward to a change of scenery.

Day 65: Marble Archways
Monday: April 28, 2014
What I find really interesting is how much a photo can change given your perspective. By including or omitting certain details, it's possible to create an entirely new photograph. For example, this photograph of the marble archways and architecture make it seem as though I'm in a historical monument of sorts. In reality, this is in a mall and if I had just tilted the camera down a bit, you'd have seen the bowling alley. Funny, isn't it?

Day 64: The Itsy Bitsy Spider
Sunday: April 27, 2014
I snapped this photo after nearly walking into this giant spider's web. Luckily, I caught myself in time and avoided a run in with the spider who created the web. I found it pretty interesting, considering that people live in these houses; so either the area has been undisturbed for a while or the spider is a very quick worker.

Day 63: Brown Eyes
Saturday: April 26, 2014
I'm not one who's ever been particularly enthusiastic about my brown eyes. I don't hate them, I just find other colors much more fascinating. I found the perfect ray of light that bounced off of a mirror in my room and I also happened to have my camera on its tripod nearby. Photos like this make me think that maybe brown eyes aren't so bad after all.

Day 62: Is This Seat Taken?
Friday: April 25, 2014
In the Dubai Metro, the trains are divided into classes depending on your ticket. A reusable silver card, or a daily red one get you a seat in the regular carts. A gold card gets you a seat in the nicer cart, where the seats are nicer and have more leg room. In between the regular carts and the gold cart, is a single cart for women and children, who can enter regardless of card type. I boarded and nobody was in the typically filled gold cart. It was slightly unnerving.

Day 61: Concrete Jungle
Thursday: April 24, 2014
These square pyramids are right outside of a mall that I frequent. The mall itself is a bit dated now, but in its heyday it was an amazing conglomeration of historically themed architecture. For example, these pyramids are located right outside of the "Egypt wing" of the mall, where there are hieroglyphs and ancient Egyptian deities to be seen.

Day 60: Costume Jewelry
Wednesday: April 23, 2014
This is a closer look into my jewelry drawer. I rarely wear the stuff, but so many pieces have stories and sentiments behind them so I refuse to give them away. For example, the pink perfume bottle and turquoise bracelets on the right are from my trip to Egypt several years ago. The little gold box has a matching earring/necklace set that was gifted to me by my cousins in Mexico who I haven't seen in over a decade. Also, today is the last day of my photo journal. Thank you for joining me.
[Edit: This is not the last day, as the project has been extended! :) ]

Day 59: Life's Like a Box of Chocolates
Tuesday: April 22, 2013
This is a box of chocolates that sadly, were devoured shortly after taking this photo. I'd been wanting chocolates for weeks now, and finally found a box that didn't contain eggs or too much dairy product. They were absolutely delicious, because the outer layer is coffee infused chocolate and the inside is sweet fondant.

Day 58: Oooh, Shiny!
Monday: April 21, 2014
As my dad pulled out of the driveway, we spotted this bright orange Corvette as it drove past us. I don't know a lot about cars, but I do know that this is one is sporting the perfect summer color.

Day 57: Iced Cappuccino With Soy, Please
Easter Sunday: April 20, 2014
For Easter, my family and I went out to eat at our favorite dim sum place, Ping Pong. They make amazing teas and sticky rice, along with dim sum. We walked around, did some summer shopping, and sat down to have coffee and dessert at Paul. I ordered a soy iced cappuccino with caramel syrup, and it was delicious. This entire day was delightful.

Day 56: Getting Location
Saturday: April 19, 2014
Today I went on a morning run at 7:15 AM. For the first five minutes, the weather was bearable. But the heat has set in for good here in Dubai. We've officially skipped over spring and gone straight into summer now. On the bright side, I've continued to love my Garmin running watch, even if it does take several minutes to grab my location.

Day 55: Chirping Birds
Friday: April 18, 2014
The windows of my house are reflective, so that we can save money on cooling the house. Unfortunately, the windows are so reflective they're practically mirrors. That means that birds often fly into the windows, thinking that it continues on. This bird struck my window several times, and then sat to start chirping.

Day 54: Pretty Graffiti
Thursday: April 17, 2014
Today, I spotted this little piece of graffiti alongside a lonely chair. This is the biggest piece of vandalism I've ever seen. Usually, there are only tiny scribbles or lovers' devotions "R + J" style. I can't make out what it used to say. Within weeks, it'll be painted over and forgotten.

Day 53: Rain in the Desert
Wednesday: April 16, 2014
For most days, the people of Dubai are met with impossibly sunny skies, or dreadful sandstorms. Rain only stops by a handful of days out of the year. Sometimes you have to improvise.

Day 52: Crazy for Coral
Tuesday: April 15, 2014
Today I decided to embrace spring and go for bright colors in my outfit. Unfortunately, Dubai has decided to skip spring and embrace summer instead because we already have highs in the upper 90s (F). Every once in a while, I'll feel a wistfulness for long, flowing hair again. Today was not one of those days.

Day 51: Supermarket Finds
Monday: April 14, 2014
Lots of people have misconceptions about Dubai. Some of the questions I've been asked include whether or not I know any terrorists, if I ever hear bombs going off at night, and if I ride a camel around as my main mode of transportation. After a while, the ignorance gets frustrating and my brother and I have made a game out of confusing people with our answers. So far, we've tried to convince people that we do, indeed, know terrorists, or that we live in a palace, or that we drink camel milk instead of cow's milk. All of these ideas were taken as extreme, obviously false scenarios because none of the above are possible. As it turns out, camel milk IS available here, and it's right next to the cow's milk. Oops.

Day 50: Two Birds
Sunday: April 13, 2014
I love this picture. For one, it's one of the very few spur-of-the-moment images I've managed to capture. But it also reminds me of a Regina Spektor song, appropriately titled "Two Birds." It's about two little birds who are together on a wire. One wants to fly away, but the other makes up excuses to delay their departure, saying things like "I'm tired" or "It's too overcast." This song probably makes my top 25 list of greatest Regina Spektor songs.

Day 49: I'm On A Roll
Saturday: April 12, 2014
I love bread. Throughout my recent discovery of my many food allergies, one that I was very afraid of having was gluten intolerance. Luckily, as far as I know, that's not a possibility right now. And that's good, because I love eating bread. I really like this set up, because it casually displays tons of rolls. It's not an arrangement I've seen in the US, mostly because of health/security issues. Somebody could sneeze on/ steal/ otherwise ruin the bread.

Day 48: Wild Wadi
Friday: April 11, 2014
Today, my brother and I spent the day at the Wild Wadi Waterpark with two of our friends. It was a perfectly sunny day, and incredibly warm. I rode tons of rides, screamed my head off, and got a bit of a tan.

Day 47: Fountains in the Desert
Thursday: April 10, 2014
These are fountains in my community that I pass by frequently. It's actually quite ironic how you can find large fountains smack dab in the middle of the desert. It's amazing what can be done with money. I think they're unnecessary, but I'd be lying if I said they weren't pretty.

Day 46: The Mash'Allah House
Wednesday: April 9, 2014
Now that the flower series is over, I've decided to simplify things a bit with a black and white photo. The past week has been color overload! This is a house I pass by when I run, and I use as a place marker. I know I'm about halfway done with my route when I reach this house. It's significant because it's one of the first phrases in Arabic I managed to read on my own. It says mash'allah, which expresses joy or excitement for an event or person that was just mentioned. It's also used to ward off jealousy, or the evil eye, which is why it's sometimes written on houses or on cars.

Day 45: April Showers Bring May Flowers Part VIII
Tuesday: April 8, 2014
This is the last diverse set of flowers I've come across. Already, it seems like some flowers are starting to wilt and die. The colorful season doesn't last very long here in Dubai, mostly because it gets hot very quickly. These pretty blooms were freshly planted, and they have a steady water supply. I'm calling them Maisie.

Day 44: April Showers Bring May Flowers Part VII
Monday: April 7, 2014
I found these tiny blossoms hidden behind a few tree branches. Purple, lavender, and other color variants are hard to come by. For whatever reason, it seems like red/pink varieties are easier to find. I like the small stripes of bright puce radiating from the center of the blooms. They're called Imogen.

Day 43: April Showers Bring May Flowers Part VI
Sunday: April 6, 2014
I fell in love with these blooms because this is the exact shade of pink I've always favorited, even as a small child. I've just always had a thing for pink. I was rather surprised to see flowers so big, they're about the size of my palm (which isn't saying much, since my hands are so small, but still.) I've decided to name these Rosalind.

Day 42: April Showers Bring May Flowers Part V
Saturday: April 5, 2014
What caught my eye about these little flowers is how dainty they are. They're so tiny and pure white, I just wanted to pluck a few and stick them in my hair. I decided to name them Grace.

Day 41: April Showers Bring May Flowers Part IV
Friday: April 4, 2014
These bright blood orange flowers stuck out like a sore thumb amidst the sea of greenery behind them. They must be sweet smelling flowers, because they were surrounded by several bees and I almost died (not really.) I like how the little filaments stick out and sway in the wind. It's sort of like they're miniature personal party streamers! How fun. Because they're so feisty, these are named Zoƫ.

Day 40: April Showers Bring May Flowers Part III
Thursday: April 3, 2014
I really liked these little round flowers because of their different colors. Baby pink is an interesting color to find in a flower, and it's likely that they're a hereditary mix of dominant and recessive genes (because they're also not pure white). If my old biology course serves me right, five petals means these flowers are dicots and might bear fruit. They're named Eleanor.

Day 39: April Showers Bring May Flowers Part II
Wednesday: April 2, 2014
This set of flowers interested me because the petals are so pigmented. It's also interesting to see two primary colors, red and yellow, shown in the petals without any bleeding or mixing into orange. These little blooms remind me of Minnie Mouse because they share a similar color scheme. So, they're named Minnie.

Day 38: April Showers Bring May Flowers Part I
Tuesday: April 1, 2014
I wish I had a clever April Fools' joke today, I really do. Instead, I'm starting a mini series here on my little blog all about flowers. I've always loved flowers, and today as I was walking around my neighborhood I noticed so many pretty ones blooming. I thought the little ditty was appropriate, because I literally did start the month of April by waking up to rain. Unfortunately, I don't know the names of any of these species, so I'll rename them. These purple flowers are called Patricia.
